Some eras are dominated by one or two distinguished artists. In other time periods, there are certain groups of artists, all of whom vie for the leader's place. Such was the period when Hogarth, Rowlandson, Cruikshank and Gillray flourished. All these artists approached same themes and yet each put his individual stamp on his work. This trend might be likened to the period of American magazine art, lead by THE NEW YORKER Magazine in which cartoonists Peter Arno, Charles Addams, George Price, Saul Steinberg, William Steig and others worked and lead the field for a period of thirty or so years.
