"Miseries of Travelling," colored etching, 1807. One of many plates by Rowlandson on the "Miseries" theme, inspired by James Beresford's Miseries of Human Life (1806). Here Rowlandson gives us an earlier version of the rush-hour crush, not in a subway, but in a stagecoach overloaded with its human cargo. Whether in Regency London or in present-day New York, the travails of city travelers is a topic always ripe for satire.
